GlaxoSmithKline maker of Paracetamol Calpol in partnership with Department of Health and the Philippine Pediatric Society spearheaded a campaign called “Aksyon Laban Sa Dengue: A Dengue Fever Awareness and Education Program” which raises awareness about Dengue. In addition, a Baranggay Caravan will be held in order to educate and engage people in the community.

What is Dengue Fever?
Dengue fever is caused by a bite of a female mosquito, Aedes Aegypti , which breeds rapidly in tropical countires like the Philippines. According to Undersecretary Dr. Eric Tayag of Department of Health, that based on World Health Organization records, there have been 100 million dengue cases recorded and 5 percent resulted in death. Last year, DOH recorded an enormous number of dengue cases (204,906) which resulted deaths of 660. This year, there are 24,900 cases of Dengue fever with death of 100.
“Dengue is a clever and cunning disease. It can disguise itself as other diseases. So during the ainy season, which is when we usually see an increase of dengue cases, it is important to be on the lookout for fever that is at least 2 days duration” says Dr. Sally Gatchalian, Secretary of the Philippine Pediatric Society.
What are the Symptoms of Dengue Fever?
Symptoms, which usually begin four to six days after infection and last for up to 10 days. Sometimes symptoms are mild and can be mistaken for those of the viral infection.
- Fever
- Severe headache
- Abdominal pain
- Pain behind the eyes
- Severe joint and muscle pain
- Nausea
- Vomiting
- Skin rash, which appears three to four days after the onset of fever
- Bleeding manifestations such a nose bleed, bleeding gums, or easy bruising.
Knowing the above symptoms, the patient MUST seek a doctor immediately.
What is the treatment for Dengue Fever?
Actuallty, there is no specific medicine to treat dengue infection. However, you should address the symptoms one by one. Dengue fever patients should avoid medicines with aspirin, which could worsen bleeding. You should also rest, drink plenty of fluids.
“While there is no secific medicine to cure Dengue, we can however alleviate the pain felt by the child at least managing their fever, like giving them Paracetamol Calpol which provides soothing fever relief that you can rely on. says Jeofrey Yulo, General Manager of GSK consumer health care.
