“CAPTIVE” A Brillante Ma Mendoza Film

“Captive” is based and adapted from real-life hostage crisis situations in the Philippines like the Dos Palmas kidnapping in Palawan than happened year 2001 and other abductions by the Abu Sayyaf Group and other similar separatist organizations.

Just recently, a blogger’s meet-up with the director of the movie Brilliante Ma Mendoza was held.

The good director shared his and the actors experiences and how he do his touches and executions to the movie.

“For Captive, I treated the whole film as a single real event. The script was based on my intensive research on certain kidnapping events and where they actually happened, and the testimonies of survivors, captors, military and others who witnessed or were part of the crisis”-says Direk Brillante

This movie was also shot chronologically. Starting from the beach resort, sea travel through boats to military siege at the town hospital to the mountains to constant trekking from one place to another to various encounters between military and Abu Sayyaf up to the very end.

Direk Brillante also shared that his approach was different, because just like the movie title itself, he made the actors like captives . The actors, staffs and crews will not go home every end of filming day but instead they are like captives inside the set where they will stay there till the whole movie shoot finishes.

“I did this because I wanted to let the actors feel the fear and the essence of kidnapping and being kidnapped. I wanted them to experience as fully as possible “the abduction” and the events that ensue while they are  in captivity”

Captive is all about humanity- the Abu Sayyafs, the hostages and evven the military . It shows something about the unseen, that everyone is captive to their own cause. Captive is about self-preservation, about survival in the face of hardships and situations beyond one’s control…
